The live music might have ended on Sunday, but there are still plenty of awesome films to enjoy before the Northside Festival officially comes to a close on June 19th. Screenings will take place at all of the best movie spots in northern Brooklyn — Nitehawk, UnionDocs, Videology, Indie Screen, and the Wythe Hotel. Unsurprisingly, all of the films look great, but here are some of our top picks.
1. The Babadook. 2014. Directed by Jennifer Kent.
Australians always seem to come up with quality horror, and The Babadook looks like it’s going to keep in that tradition. The trailer alone is terrifying, and as of now, it holds a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Remember to bring a buddy and/or your security blanket to this one.
The Babadook is screening @ Nitehawk on Wednesday, June 18th @ 9:45pm.
2. Seventeen. 1983. Directed by Joel DeMott and Jeff Kreines.
Not only does this intimate documentary about a group of teens ‘coming of age in the working class’ in the 1980’s look totally compelling, but it’s rarely screened. Thankfully, Northside is giving interested film-goers a chance to check it out.
Seventeen is screening @ UnionDocs on Thursday, June 19th @ 7pm
3. Daisies. 1966. Directed by Vera Chytilová.
Daisies is a super-trippy, feminist Czech film from the 1960’s. It was banned by authorities, so you know it’s good.
Daisies is screening @ Nitehawk on Thursday, June 19th @ 9:30pm
4. Rezeta. 2012. Directed by Fernando Frias.
Fernando Frias’s first feature film Rezeta won the Grand Jury Narrative Prize at Slamdance 2014, and he’s been regarded as a promising director ever since. Plus, complicated love stories are always better when models are involved.
Rezeta is screening @ The Wythe Hotel on Wednesday, June 18th @ 9pm
5. Summer of Blood. 2014. Directed by Onur Tukel.
The best summer films include slacker Brooklyn vampires and lots of blood, right? Bonus: This screening will be Summer of Blood’s Brooklyn premiere!
Summer of Blood is screening @ Nitehawk on Wednesday, June 18th @ 7:15pm
