Sunflower Bean can be a little deceiving at first — at least in name. Their sunshine-y moniker isn’t necessarily what comes to mind when I think of “neo-psychedelic” or “night music” — but the unexpectedness of it, much like the juxtaposition of tender, reverb-laden segues and upbeat punk tempos and distortion, is entirely satisfying.
They’ve got a kaleidoscopic style, vacillating between a mesmerizing sway and a punch in the face. In August, the trio received a well-deserved nod from Nylon, and they are currently slated to do some damage at the Greenpoint Music Festival on September 20th, followed by a jaunt at Palisades on the 22nd. In the meantime, check out where the dudes and lady of Sunflower Bean turn to for inspiration, fuel, and escape.
