When it comes to teenage rom-coms, 10 Things I Hate About You is a diamond among a bunch of coals. It’s jam-packed with so many brilliant and memorable moments — i.e. a lesson on the difference between like (Sketchers) and love (Prada backpacks), Patrick Verona’s casual lighting of a cigarette off a bunsen burner in science class (R.I.P. HEATH LEDGER), Bianca Stratford’s weird crop top/ballet costume hybrid of a prom dress, etc. — and with the numerous allusions to Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, it’s also mildly educational. But it was undoubtedly the older Stratford sister, Katarina, who stole the show and will forever remain an important female character. When Kat wasn’t mocking Bianca’s shallowness or pissing off their high-strung father, she was doing badass stuff like blasting Joan Jett, going to Club Skunk, and reading Sylvia Plath. We can assume she had a library filled with Riot grrrl CD’s, but what would she be listening to if she was around today? Would she embrace *popular* feminists like Beyoncé and Lorde? Or would she exclusively maintain a love for angst-ridden indie rock? Check out our guesses in the playlist below.
