Juneteenth is the real day of independence. It’s defined as “The holiday that commemorates the official end of slavery,” and honors the day that two years after the emancipation proclamation was signed when finally all Black Americans were told and granted their rightful freedom. To celebrate, Bandcamp is donating 100% of its share to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Many bands and labels are following suit with donating proceeds to various organizations. We’d like to invite you to check out and support some of the Black artists and bands featuring Black artists below — not just today, but every day.
War Violet
Though Getaway overalls evokes upbeat and sunny vibes, Aremu’s lyrics and vocals hint a sense of longing. Bittersweet, kind of like how summer feels in its last days. Throw on your big 70s sunglasses, listen to this while walking around, and “create a world shielded from the harshness of city life,” as Aremu intended. — Hannah Burke
Dehd
Dehd yield the ability to rip the listener’s heart to shreds and simultaneously sew it back together again, and that is precisely what makes it such a universally relatable and addictive listen. — Lindsay Teske
Naeem
Graduating from his previous persona as Spank Rock, Naeem shows a softer, sweeter, (but still a little bit nasty) side on ‘Startisha’.
Serena Isioma
Mixing R&B and bedroom pop influences to create a genre all their own, Serena Isioma’s music is refreshingly unique and incomparably catchy.
Fast Car Slow Car
If you want to get stoned in your apartment and float the day away, Fast Car Slow Car is for you. Chill, synth-y, electronic. Also good for your transportation, soundtracking your life needs.
Kahiem Rivera
Bushwick’s own Kahiem Rivera has become a scene staple and rightfully so. His debut album ‘Bummer Boy’ is super sexy and still lets you cry in the club if you feel the need.
