Tilly and the Wall at Bowery Ballroom

Like a million years ago before I was swept away in festival production mode and holidays, I attended shows and events with the intention of reviewing them for Alt Citizen. In an attempt to catch up, I will be posting them in a series called “Backlogged.”

Back in October, I went to go see Omaha-based indie pop band Tilly and the Wall at Bowery Ballroom. I had liked what I had heard from their new album Heavy Mood and remembered liking the few songs I had heard from their last album O.

When I arrived at the show, I thought that maybe I went to the wrong venue, as openers Nicky Da B was leading some booty shakin’ madness while New Orleans bounce blared through the ballroom.

Honestly, the show was so long ago, I don’t remember most of the details. What I did take away was this:

– Tossing confetti-filled balloons in the audience to keep them occupied while you set up? Brilliant.
– Amplifying a tap dancing platform to support the drummer? So freakin’ cool, but I was out of breath on behalf of Jamie. You go, girl!
– More people should have two adorable lead singers exuding sheer joy while performing twee synth punk.
– I have seen a lot of bands perform at Bowery Ballroom over the years, but the tears in the eyes of the members of Tilly and the Wall as they called back onto the stage for an encore was a refreshing first. The genuine humility and heartfelt appreciation for their fans was rare, notable, and simply touching.
