Band Crush: Panama @ Baby’s All Right

I made a late-night stop at Baby’s All Right, a bar that is quickly becoming the hottest music venue in Brooklyn, to catch a trio of hip Aussies called Panama. The line was out the door, and crowd-control inside was all but hopeless. Having been pushed, pulled and shamelessly mowed over, my friend yanked my arm forward and we made our way to the front of the stage. JYL-Panama_ALT-8 Without grand introduction, Jarrah McCleary (lead vocals, keys, guitar), Tom Marland (keys, guitar), and Tim Commandeur (drums) slipped past us at the side door and walked onto stage while the crowd still chattered, unaware that the band had even left the green room.. The guy next to me yelled “Always!” the same way your dad must have yelled “Free Bird!” at a Lynyrd Skynyrd gig, and with a smirk, Commandeur counted them in. JYL-Panama_ALT-2 The electronic pop trio recently released their second EP leading with track “Always” having been produced by Eric Broucek of LCD Soundsystem fame. Knowing only that track before attending the show, I was surprised to arrive to a sold out venue with an unstoppable crowd singing back the lyrics to every song the band played. JYL-Panama_ALT-5 McCleary has a wispy and romantic tone to his voice that was pleasant to listen to, but I found that Commandeur the drummer stole the show. Keeping on beat, as drummers do, Tim commanded (see what I did there?) the entire set and when I turned around to check the crowd, most of the guys were air-drumming along with him. He didn’t even have to loosen his adorable button-up shirt brought all the way up his neck. PANMAM-GIF-SMALLER Review by Eva Bandurowski.
