Every night becomes legendary when Grito Exclamación takes the stage, and their recent gig at 316 Centro was no exception. This iconic CDMX venue has been at the heart of the rock scene for years, fostering incredible talent like Grito Exclamación. I slipped backstage and asked these poetic rebels for a few words. We locked ourselves in the bathroom, I turned on the recorder, and the conversation flowed:
Todas las noches son memorables si incluyen a Grito Exclamación y así fue en la tocada pasada en 316 centro, un lugar emblemático de la ola rockera de la CDMX desde hace varios años y que, poco a poco, ha ido creciendo para arropar a artistas talentosisimos como es el caso de Grito Exclamac¡ón. Me escabullí hacia el camerino y les pedí unas palabras a estos personajes poéticos y contestatarios, nos encerramos en el baño, encendí la grabadora y nos pusimos a platicar:

J: Ya, ps préndanlo, ps vamos a acá…
Eduardo Gante (EG): No rush, no rush, take it easy.
EG: No, tranqui, tranqui, tranqui.

Angélica Victoria (AV): The first question is…
AV: La primera pregunta es…
Rafa Squash (R) jumps in, asking and answering his own question: How would you define your project? Well, we’re a countercultural movement fighting against the adversity faced by sea turtles because of plastic straws.
RAFA INTERRUMPE y procede a autopreguntarse y autocontestar: ¿Cómo definen su proyecto? Pues somos un movimiento contracultural que luchamos contra la adversidad que sufren las tortugas en el mar por los popotes.
J: Aaahhh, damn, and white coral too!
J: Aaahhh no mames, y el coral blanco!
AV: Thanks for that, Rafa. Second question, where are you guys from?
AV: Gracias por la aportación, Rafa. Segunda pregunta, ¿de dónde son?
EG: Wait, are we recording already?
EG: ¿pero, o sea, ya está grabando?
R: From here, Mexico City.

AV: Where did you all meet?
AV: ¿En dónde se conocieron?
R: Eddy and I met at gigs about 5 years ago, and Sebas too, and everyone else from the scene. Mostly through music.
R: Eddy y yo en tocadas hace como 5 años y a Sebas también y a todos también, del desmadre. De la música más bien.
AV: And the ladies?
AV: ¿Y las chicas?
J: Well, Eddy and Rafa were working on a project, brainstorming, rehearsing, and one day they invited me to a jam session, and I was like, “Sure, why not!”
J: Pues, entre Eddy y Rafa estaban haciendo un proyecto, estaban en ideas, ensayando y un día me dijeron “caéle a un jamsito” y dije ¡Va!
AV: How long have you been playing together?
AV: ¿Cuánto tiempo llevan tocando?
EG: Together, for a year, but since the project started, about two years.
EG: Juntos llevamos un año pero desde que inició el proyecto dos años.
AV: Any memorable shows?
AV: ¿Algún show memorable?
R: Hell yeah, tons!
R: ¡Pues un chingo!
P: All of them.
P: Todos.
R: The Indie Rocks! gig has been the best so far.
R: El del Indie Rocks! ha sido hasta ahorita el top.
J: I think the coolest part of Indie Rocks! was when everything went silent, and it was just us singing a cappella. The unity we felt was amazing.
J: Creo que lo más chido del Indie Rocks! fue como esa unión que tuvimos cuando se apagó todo y sólo fue en Acapella.
ALL: Sebas saved us!

AV: Have any of you played in other bands?
AV: ¿Alguien de ustedes a tocado en alguna otra banda?
S: Eddy and I used to play in Coronel Hans Landa.
S: Eddy y yo tocábamos en el Coronel Hans Landa.
EG: Sebas has been in other bands like Banda Isabel, Okama… and I’ve played with Coronel, Zeit!, and now Grito. What about you, Rafa?
EG: Sebas ya ha tenido otras bandas como la Banda Isabel, Okama… y yohe tocado con el Coronel, Zeit!, inaudible y ahorita ya con Grito. ¿Tú Rafa?
R: I had a band called Etore, but we were going nowhere.
R: Tenía una banda que se llamaba Etore pero no íbamos a ningún lado.
AV: And you ladies?
AV: ¿Ustedes chicas?
P and J: No, never.
P y J: No, nunca.
AV: First band and already making waves. It’s all or nothing.
AV: Es la primera y ya directo al estrellato. Es todo o nada.

AV: Any hobbies, passions, jobs, or other interests?
AV: ¿Alguien tiene algún hobbie, pasión, trabajo u otras cosas que hagan o les guste hacer?
R: I play mini-golf professionally.
R: Yo golfito profesional.

EG: I’m into writing, got stuff published in Air Magazine, and some other riffs.
EG: A mí me gusta escribir y tengo escritos en algunas páginas… en Air Magazine, otros trips.
AV: Cool, gotta invite the crew to check it out.
AV: Chingón, para invitar a la banda a que se echen un clavado.
R: Yeah, to get cultured with the “archie”.
R: Sí, que se cultiven aquí con el Arqui.
EG: Oh, yeah. I also do architecture.
EG: Ah, sí. También hago Arquitectura.
ALL: He’s badass, the ArchieDark, great architect, he knows his stuff.

ALL: Sebas has the Botanical Garden, his personal project.

S: Yeah, that’s what I do in my free time.

P: I studied social psychology and work in that field. I also love writing and literature.
P: Yo estudié psicología social y ejerzo eso. También escribir y la literatura me gusta mucho.
J: I’m an IT specialist, I can hack you guys.

R: I like making collages and design. I’ll have something to show you soon.

AV: Any other bands you’re currently listening to?

EG: Segundos Auxilios are our friends from Fresnillo Zacatecas, we just met them but they’re already part of the crew. They’re insanely talented and I hope to collaborate with them soon. Also, Sam aka Llanta Bíblica, that guy has like a million projects, all super cool. I think he’s the best in music right now. Everything he does, Cáustica Espástica…
EG: Segundos Auxilios son unos carnalotes de Fresnillo Zacatecas, apenas los topamos pero ya son de la pandilla, están muy cabrones y espero pronto hacer algo con esos carnales. También Sam aka Llanta Bíblica, ese wey tiene como un millón de proyectos, todos súper cabrones, ese wey es el más cabrón que existe de la música ahora. Yo creo que todo lo que hace ese carnal, Cáustica Espástica…

AV: Do you have new music coming out soon?
AV: ¿Tienen música que va a salir pronto?
EG: Yes, we’re finishing up the album, so around June the whole album should be out. We only have one track out now, so soon it’ll be time to release everything.
EG: Sí, estamos terminando de grabar el disco entonces en junio más o menos sale ya todo el disco completo. Sólo tenemos una rola arriba así que pronto será momento de sacar todo.
AV: Any upcoming shows?
AV: ¿Shows que vengan pronto?
EG: We have a tour, can’t spoil too much, but it’s gonna be all over the country. We’ve got a gig lined up to support Palestine, and more in the pipeline. June and July, we’re hitting the road.
EG: Tenemos una gira, todavía no puedo spoilear pero es una gira en gran parte de la república, estamos en un show por palestina y otras en puerta. Junio y julio estaremos de gira.
