ICYMI vol 20: The Drums, The Paranoyds, Kyle Craft

“Hungry Sam” – The Paranoyds

Do not watch this video if you are not okay. The latest Suicide Squeeze signees are hyper contoured, purple sludge eating, infomercial hosting, deadpan drones in “Hungry Sam”. Perhaps commentary on how in the digital age it’s the blind leading the fucking blind — whether it’s makeup trends, youtube tutorials, or keeping up with America’s royal family the Kardashians — and how little thought and a lot of talk is blitzing our brains into mush and turning us all into these kinds of drones. It’s a little nauseating, but in a good way.

“Body Chemistry” – The Drums

First of all, this song is a BOP and the video is a glitched out fever dream. It’s almost like electro-pop meets soft rock. Behind the sunny instrumentals, though, is a more sobering message. Maybe it’s possible to know too much. To be too self-aware. To have such an understanding of humanity that going through the calculated motions of wooing someone can be completely emotionless — not out of spite or contempt, but as a result of your depression.

“2 Ugly 4 NY” – Kyle Craft

I’ve heard too ugly for LA or too dumb for New York, but “2 Ugly 4 NY” is another level of self-deprecation — although I’m not sure if I’ve ever resonated so strongly as with a face painted, skeletal Craft, dissociating in a full on cloak in a hot tub. Craft has brought his signature twang into a more Raconteurs-esque world with his latest release. This isn’t his first ode to our great city, either, but a much different tone than the bittersweet nostalgia of “Chelsea Hotel #2”. The song pokes fun at the fact that we might all be broken inside. Maybe we don’t belong anywhere — just a square peg to the world’s round hole.
