Jordana’s EP ‘Something to Say’ is confident and quirky

Singer-songwriter Jordana Nye has released her latest EP Something to Say and let me tell you she had a lot to say in those sixteen minutes. Bedroom pop, a little folk, a heavy dose of electric guitar and some edgy electronic beats — the result: Jordana’s thoughts on authenticity and self preservation.

The first track on the EP, “I’ll Take it Boring”, feels like a confession of regret. Jordana sings, “I wanna stay where it’s warm outside / I don’t think that I’m feeling alright / I didn’t want to go out tonight / So I’ll take it boring, I’ll take it boring”. This whole track is basically my 2020 vibe because, let’s be honest, does anyone actually want to go outside right now?

There’s an energetic shift by the time we reach “Hitman” — you can feel the tension and suspense throughout the song. She opens with a stark observation about what I can only assume is a comment on the state of the U.S. before gifting us with a glitchy beat drop, continuing into an electronic scratchy beat, and topped with what can only be described as a simultaneously gritty and silky vocals about releasing her inner hitman.

The EP is as quirky as it is meditative. “Far Away From You”, speaks volumes to past toxic relationships having no place in the future. In the opening verser she sings, “Honestly I’m really glad you never hit me up at all / When I look back I see that every time we talked I felt so small / Wish I could think about the better times to help my mental health / I’d sell my soul if it meant I could go and save my younger self”. Such a strong opener for what goes on to be one of my favorite tracks on the EP.

Jordana concludes the EP with the same energy she started with, genuine and honest, with “Forgetter”, on which she questions and overthinks the feelings of a romantic partner to the point of exhaustion before getting maybe too high in an attempt to reach the peace of mind that’s escaping you. Jordana tells us so much, without giving too much away, giving the listener space to put themselves into the world she created on Something to Say.
