Desde secuestrar un avión hasta bootlegs, esta es la historia de Les Rallizes Dénudés y porque se convirtieron en un misterio en Japón y el mundo.
En 1967 Les Rallizes Dénudés era una banda de psych doom de Kioto creada por Takashi Mizutani un existencialista y aficionado de The Velvet Underground y Bob Dylan entre otros. Su sonido era explosivo, melódico y muchas veces sexy con un toque de misticismo y mucho reverb.
Mizutani al entrar a la universidad encontró un grupo de compañeros con los cuales compartía una mentalidad idealista un tanto anárquica no muy apegada a la ideología americana de pos-guerra y el consumismo la cual creo rápidamente una estabilidad económica en Japón sino a una más europea reuniéndose en cafés vestidos de negro leyendo Jacques Derrida o Simone de Beauvoir mientras fumaban cigarros franceses.
Durante este tiempo se unió el bajista Moriaki Wakabayashi otro estudiante que compartía una forma de pensar muy parecida a la de Mizutani pero con ideas más extremistas. Wakabayashi comenzó a estar en diferentes altercados entre estudiantes de izquierda y la policía las cuales terminaron muchas veces en tragedia.
Uno de estos altercados fue el secuestro del vuelo 351 de Japan Airlines orquestado por el Ejército Rojo Japones con Wakabayashi como miembro y aterrorizando a los pasajeros con katanas y pistolas de juguete, afortunadamente nadie resulto lastimado.
Los responsables del secuestro, Wakabayashi entre ellos buscaron asilo político en Corea del Norte mientras la banda pasaba por el peor momento ya que fueron investigados y monitoreados por el gobierno japones y la CIA.
Tal vez este incidente les dio ese toque nihilista en su sonido por todo el caos de este incidente y todo lo que ocurría en las calles, el choque de ideologías, la guerra fría y el armagedon nuclear. Los Rallizes continuaron tocando en cafés, pequeños gigs y reuniones de estudiantes.
Sin importar los rumores de ser terroristas ellos nunca participaron en ninguna organización mas bien eran anarquistas. Desafortunadamente
nada de eso importo ya que siempre se les veía ligados a la peor representación de extremismo.
Mizutani se aisló de todos por la misma paranoia, los shows empezaron a ser menos mientras las otras bandas se alejaban de los Rallizes. Por el resto de su carrera vivieron en un tipo de purgatorio donde nunca fueron invitados a entrevistas o a shows de televisión para darse a conocer.
Se cree que Muzutani después de todo esto se fue a vivir a las montañas en una zona remota de Japón de repente apareciendo para tocar en algún show con miembros antiguos y nuevos. Durante los 80s y 90s siguieron tocando muy rara vez en diferentes lugares hasta que en 1997 Muzutani desapareció y los rumores comenzaron, decían que estaba mentalmente inestable apunto de morir o que vivía bien en París.
Hasta que una persona pudo localizarlo en 2020 y tuvieron una pequeña entrevista donde platicaron sobre el COVID y el futuro de la banda y por lo poco que se sabe Muzutani tiene planeado un último tour.
Existe muy poca información sobre la banda ya que nunca dieron una entrevista como tal y lo que podemos recolectar de su música es solo un par de canciones grabadas en un estudio sin terminar ya que Mizutani nunca estuvo contento con el resultado de la grabación y las demás son bootlegs de aficionados que iban a sus conciertos.
Al final por más difícil que haya sido toda su trayectoria entre acusaciones y una vida en aislamiento Mizutani es alguien honesto con el arte y más en estos tiempos donde un concierto en 3D es más importante que el mensaje en si y tal vez todo lo que no estuvo a su favor lo convirtió más en un músico que aprecia más en ser real y transmitir emociones que venderse por completo y contaminar generaciones con falsas imágenes y letras vacías.

From hijacking a plane to bootlegs, this is the story of Les Rallizes Dénudés and why they became a mystery to Japan and the world.
In 1967 Les Rallizes Dénudés was a Kyoto psych doom band created by Takashi Mizutani, an existentialist and fan of The Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan among others. Their sound was explosive, melodic and often sexy with a touch of mysticism and a lot of reverb.
When entering the university, Mizutani found a group of colleagues with whom he shared a somewhat anarchic idealistic mentality not very attached to the post-war American ideology and consumerism which quickly created an economic stability in Japan, but a more European one by meeting in cafes dressed in black reading Jacques Derrida or Simone de Beauvoir while smoking French cigars.
During this time, bassist Moriaki Wakabayashi was joined by another student who shared a way of thinking very similar to Mizutani’s, but with more extreme ideas. Wakabayashi began to be in different altercations between leftist students and the police which many times ended in tragedy.
One of these altercations was the hijacking of Japan Airlines Flight 351 orchestrated by the Japanese Red Army with Wakabayashi as a member and terrorizing the passengers with katanas and toy guns — fortunately no one was hurt.
Those responsible for the kidnapping, including Wakabayashi, sought political asylum in North Korea while the gang was going through the worst of times as they were investigated and monitored by the Japanese government and the CIA.
Maybe this incident gave them that nihilistic touch to their sound — all the chaos of this incident and everything that happened in the streets, the clash of ideologies, the cold war and nuclear armageddon. The Rallizes continued to play cafes, small gigs, and student gatherings.
Regardless of the rumors of being terrorists, they never participated in any organization, rather they were anarchists. Unfortunately none of that mattered since they were always seen to be linked to the worst representation of extremism.
Mizutani isolated himself from everyone by the same paranoia, the shows began to be less while the other bands moved away from the Rallizes. For the rest of their career they lived in a kind of purgatory where they were never invited to interviews or television shows to make themselves known.
It is believed that Muzutani after all this went to live in the mountains in a remote area of Japan suddenly showing up to play some show with old and new members. During the 80s and 90s they continued to play very rarely in different places until in 1997 Muzutani disappeared and the rumors began, saying that he was mentally unstable about to die or that he was living well in Paris.
Until a person was able to locate him in 2020 and they had a small interview where they talked about COVID and the future of the band and from what little is known Muzutani has one last tour planned.
There is very little information about the band. They never gave an interview as such and what we can collect from their music is only a couple of songs recorded in an unfinished studio since Mizutani was never happy with the result of the recording or bootlegs from fans who went to their concerts.
In the end, no matter how difficult his entire career has been between accusations and a life in isolation, Mizutani is someone honest with art. In these times where a 3D concert is more important than the message itself, perhaps everything was not in his favor but made him more of a musician who prioritizes being real and transmitting emotions over selling himself completely and contaminating generations with false images and empty lyrics.
