Listen: Beverly “Planet Birthday”

Beverly, Frankie Rose’s new project with Drew Citron, made a pretty strong impression on us with its debut song, “Honey Do.” The group has a new song out this week as well, the interestingly (to say the least) titled “Planet Birthday.” Both songs appear on Careers, the band’s debut album for one of my (and hopefully your) favorite record labels, Kanine. The album will be out in a few short weeks, and given Ms. Rose’s recent output, we’re all pretty excited to see what she does with a garage rock approach.

“Planet Birthday” has a lot of the same DNA as “Honey Do” but conveys the style in a different way. It has the aforementioned garage rock / lo-fi sound, but the vocals are so immaculate that they trump any attempts to purposely hold them back. Drum and bass are the other stars of the song, creating a menacing back bone that carries the song along. It’s an overall interesting track, blending Rose’s recent affinity for spacey rock with very basic rock ‘n’ roll. It’s something that certainly has me excited, at least. Check it out below.

Careers is out July 1st on Kanine.
