Jessie Ware burst onto the scene in 2012 with her brilliant debut album Devotion, not to mention her appearances on SBTRKT’s self titled album and on Disclosure’s 2013 album of the year candidate, Settle. Needless to say she’s been pretty busy. Word is that we will be getting a new album from Miss Ware this year, and we’ve heard our first hint of that in “Tough Love,” a single supposedly from said album.
The song starts out with the electonica equivalent of a guttural growl. It’s not a new sound, but it was pretty fun to describe it like that. The song is largely subdued, with a relatively simple drum pattern to whisk it along. Ware carries the song vocally, eschewing big moments for a different form of emotional power. The song is comfortable, confidant, and maybe a little dejected. It’s beautiful in the way that it feels lived in without having to force a high energy moment. It’s something not all artists can pull off, especially ones only preparing their sophomore album. What I’m trying to say is: Ware’s new album can’t come out soon enough. Check it out below.
The “Tough Love” single is out August 3 on PMR. Ware should be announcing the details of her new album soon.
