
Late last year, the Brooklyn-via-Texas singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Morby released his excellent solo debut, Harlem River, to considerable acclaim. Perhaps best known as bassist of the popular freak-folk band Woods and guitarist of the less popular Brooklyn gems The Babies, Morby explores classic folk and Americana with a modern sensibility. While Harlem River displayed his knack for characters and location, his new single for Suicide Squeeze Records feels a bit more personal.
“My Name” is one-half of a new 7″ EP to be released worldwide at the end of July. The song is just Morby and his guitar, but it’s endlessly affecting — a testament to the haunting vocals and tumbling structure. “And if you call my name out at the sky / Watch the sun go black now / Watch it leave your eye,” he sings reservedly. Though Morby never looks inward, the lyrics are ultimately telling, and have us hungry to dissect more of his solo output. Check it out below:
