Brooklyn noise makers Parquet Courts teased their Record Store Day single for “Sunbathing Animal” a few months back by releasing the song as sheet music. While it was nice to know they were working on something, it didn’t really give us a legitimate taste of the song. The band finally released the actual song this week, along with somewhat unexpected details for an album of the same name. The album will be out in June on What’s Your Rupture/ Mom + Pop, heralded by the aforementioned 7″ out on Record Store Day (that’s April 19th).
“Sunbathing Animal” itself fits the malleable rock style that Parquet Courts have worked in since their beginning. There isn’t really a sense of any rhythm section, as the drums are just a constant pounding forward. Coupled with Andrew Savage’s meandering vocals and no obvious chorus, the song feels a little disorienting, but it’s a style that feels explicitly chosen to do just that. It’s still fast paced and fun, and it will be interesting to see if they can keep it up for a whole album. Listen below.
