It’s easy to describe a song, artist, or album as simply beautiful. It’s a catch all term at this point. But some artists do make truly beautiful music, and Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, is a prime example. He often conveys emotions more powerful than any full band with just a piano backing and his haunting vocals. Hadreas will be releasing a third album this fall on Matador, titled Too Bright. His latest song, taken from said album, is titled “Queen,” and shows off an expanded stylistic repertoire.
The first thing you might notice is the power in Hadreas’ voice. While he’s usually let his vocals feel vulnerable in the past, they really take control of the song on “Queen.” There is also some not so surprising additions, such as a backing drum section. Other slightly more surprising additions include whistling and organ, adding some new layers to his sound that don’t really veer it off into any unknown horizons, but add some nice accompaniments. It’s easily one of the most interesting and adventurous things he’s done, and it only bodes well for the rest of Too Bright. Check it out below.
Too Bright is out September 22 on Matador.
