Sharon Van Etten has grown in virtually every aspect as an artist with each successive album. Are We There, her upcoming album on Jagjaguwar, looks to be an album that might set her over the edge into full fledged stardom, at least If “Your Love Is Killing Me” is any indication.
It’s a song that is instantly relate-able for anyone who has had a toxic but unquenchable love for a person. Your humble author definitely thought back to a couple moments in his life. One of the closest things we get to a chorus is a few lines that read simple but eloquent: “Break my legs so I won’t walk to you/Cut my tongue so I can’t talk to you/Burn my skin so I can’t feel you/Stab my eyes so I can’t see you.” That and thrown in lines such as “Try to tell you this when I’m sober” are, just, ugh, I feel you girl. It’s also a song that never really gives the listener a chance to take a breath. Needless to say there’s a lot of excellent stuff going on here. Check it out below.
Van Etten’s album, Are We There, is out May 27 on Jagjaguwar.
