Son Lux has officially teamed up with everyone’s favorite pop starlet, Lorde, on a track for his new EP Alternate Worlds, which is a reimagining of four songs from his most recent album Lanterns. Alongside mutual admiration, I’m sure that her faithful and evocative cover of “Easy” at the Laneway Festival in Auckland, New Zealand played a big part in the genesis of this interesting (and successful) collaboration. The newly minted “Easy (Switch Screens)” is a little more sparse and a good deal more sinister than its predecessor. Lorde picks up the bulk of the vocal duties this time around, invoking a dark, breathy low-end that creeps across the restless percussion and fleeting snippets of synth. Equally menacing and colorful sax accents still carry the track forward, but whereas the original had the approachability and groove of a beat, this incarnation embraces morbid, almost grating, undertones. It crawls, scratches, and bites, so be careful. Check it out below, and pick up Alternate Worlds here.
