Wye Oak caused a stir with the murky rock and weathered hooks carved across their 2011 album Civilian. 2014 will be known as the year that Wye Oak tore it all down just to build their back up from Jenn Wasner’s molasses-thick alto and Andy Stack’s off-kilter backbeats. The Baltimore duo haven’t completely abandoned the sounds of the glory days of the band’s inception, though. Their latest single, “Glory,” harkens back to the tremoring guitars and and brawny low-end of the oh-so-contemplative Civilian days. Instead of riding on Jenn Wasner’s velvety musings with some tacked on tambourines flourishes, Wye Oak are now experimenting with a clicks-and-mortar songwriting dynamic. With eons of sonic grandeur left to explore, their latest single is a harrowing practice of exploration — let’s hope that the rest of the album finishes the journey strong. Listen to “Glory” below.
Shriek will be out out April 28 via City Slang.
