Live Show Round Up 10/06 -10/12

Monday: Oct. 6th

  • Night Club 101: Skullcrusher
    • Ethereal, yearning, indie folk. Skullcrusher’s latest EP Living is dreamy and warm. This show is for fans of Phoebe Bridgers and Gracie Abrams.

Tuesday: Oct. 7th

  • Brooklyn Steel: Swans
    • Swans dropped their seventeenth studio album, Birthing, in May. In typical Swans fashion (apart from Red Yellow) each of the album’s seven tracks clocks out to be around 20 minutes. Yet, despite its length, Birthing sounds concise. Spacey and atmospheric, there’s a sense of finality to the LP.
  • The Warsaw: Marietta, awakebutstillinbed
    • Marietta hasn’t released any music since their split EP with Modern Baseball in 2015, and they’re still one of the best midwest emo bands around. The band is  only playing four shows on this short stint of a tour. Don’t miss this one.

Wednesday: Oct. 8th

  • Brooklyn Steel: The Rapture
    • Echoes has stood the test of time. My world was rocked when I heard House of Jealous of Lovers for the first time (at the ripe age of 14). The band’s been pretty quiet since the early 2010s, meaning they’ll play all the hits at this show.
  • Radio City Music Hall: Alex G
    • Alex G is all grown up. His latest album, Headlights, reflects a maturity and confidence obtained through years of dedicated experimentation and creative pursuit. It’s not trying to “be” anything, it just is. For that reason, I can’t stop listening. “Once I rode a black horse/water in my lungs/ flying down the interstate/just to watch the colors run.” Headlights is pure honesty poetry…

Thursday: Oct. 9th

  • Night Club 101: Lily Seabird
    • Lily Seabird’s new album Trash Mountain is bittersweet and sultry alt country. The album’s title is a reference to the Vermont “hippie house” Seabird lives in.  You can feel the hardwood floors and hearth in each track.
  • Alphaville: BIG BAND, Ciggy Pop, Lizzy Young:
    • This one is for all my alt rock and chorus pedal loving friends. Listen to BIG BAND’s new single Ensues; it sounds New Wave inspired.

Friday: Oct 10th

  • Brooklyn Paramount: Air
    • What I would give to be at this show. Air is playing Moon Safari. Every track. Sexy Boy, Remember, Kelly Watch the Stars, New Star in the Sky… Secretly (shhh), I wish they were also playing The Virgin Suicides soundtrack. Someday, all my Air fantasies will come true. If you can’t make the Friday show, don’t worry; Air is also playing the Paramount on the 11th and 12th.
  • Bowery Ballroom: Water From Your Eyes
    • When It’s A Beautiful Place dropped earlier this summer, I listened to it for about a month straight. Amo’s stellar production and Rachel Brown’s vocals swirl, and no doubt, keep you on your toes for the entirety of the album. Make sure to listen to Born 2
  • **DM for Address**: Worldpeace DMT, Angus Scratch, Green, Lee Ho Fooks
    • The Velvet Underground & Rowan was one of my favorite releases of the summer. Worldpeace DMT’s album is playful and funny, yet unequivocally on the nose. Each track evokes such refreshing originality. My personal fav track is Say The Sky is Grey
  • Bridge and Tunnel Brewery: Computer, Holidays in United States, One Hour Photo
    • Math rock/midwest emo situation. Computer’s new EP Zero inspires me to lock myself in a room and practice in DAEAC#E for hours.
  • TransPecos: Hiding Places, Sister, Mariah Houston
    • Hiding Places sounds a lot like Wednesday, but I love Wednesday. The band recently released a split with trust blinks. and Tombstone Poetry; be sure to listen to Flooded Island

Saturday: Oct 11th

  • Knockdown Center: Destroyer, Cass McCombs (solo) & Jennifer Castle
    • Destroyer began as Dan Bejar’s solo home-recording project back in the early nineties. 20 years and 14 albums later, Destroyer released Dan’s Boogie in March. In comparison to Destroyer’s dancier albums, Dan’s Boogie verges on cinematic. Pitchfork wrote the LP is meant to be listened to “ the next morning in your sunglasses on the train” after a night at the “amphetamine disco.”
  • Brooklyn Paramount: The Psychedelic Furs
    • Whenever I listen to The Psychedelic Furs I feel like I’m in a John Hughes movie. The band released an album back in 2020; let’s hope they stick to the classics at this concert.
