Monday: 10/20
- Le Poisson Rouge: Lebanon Hanover, Silent EM, Jim E. Brown
- Everybody who had a goth phase knows Lebanon Hanover. The Swiss–British music duo released their sixth LP Asylum Lullabies in July; and let me tell you, it’s eerie. This show screams Halloween.
Tuesday: 10/21
- Night Club 101: The Heaven, Smush, Lou Salome
- Towards the end of Lou Salome’ song Faith the duo weaves a rendition of Why Can’t I Touch It? into the track. My apologies to Steve Diggle, but female vocals on the classic Buzzcocks song hit different. I cannot stop listening to this song.
- Brooklyn Paramount: Modest Mouse, Built to Spill
- Dream line up. Some things will never change, and 90s grunge will forever be my favorite genre of music. Carry the Zero was one of the first songs I learned on guitar.
- Casette: D.A. Crimson, Gabriel Delicious, Pain Annihilator
- In D.A. Crimson’s song Golden Egg he sings, “when I was a golden egg, you bought me at the fair.” Crimson’s lyricism and sound call up images of a sweet, sweet summer.
Wednesday: 10/22
- Beacon Theatre: Neko Case
- I’m a huge Neko Case fan. While Case’s new album Neon Grey Midnight Green is no Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, one can hope she plays Star Witness at the Beacon Theatre.
- Night Club 101: Florry, Dari Bay
- Country rock baybeeee! Florry’s new album Sounds like… sunshine. I’ve seen Florry live a few times and it’s always a good time.
Thursday: 10/23
- Alphaville: speedfriending, Bad Therapist, Parlor Hour
- speedfriending’s debut album earthbending is out on 10/23, and was “made on a mic hanging from the stand by its XLR, mixed in the fetal position, sounds like imax and feels like a shower at the beach. No synths, no pop filters, saturation on everything.” For sonic comparison, think feeble little horse or Aunt Katrina.
- Xanadu: Kitty Craft, After
- The 90’s lo-fi twee project of Pamela Valfer is making its first stage appearance in over twenty years. Fuzzy samples, finger twirling vocals, Kitty Craft’s youthful sound has a sugary naivitie to it.
Friday: 10/24
- Knockdown Center: Erika de Casier, Smerz, Clara La San, Fine, urika’s bedroom
- Outline Fest is back at Knockdown Center. This line up (minus urika’s bedroom) are masters of sultry, lustful postmodern pop. Smerz’s You got time and I got money is so sexy it hurts.
- Market Hotel: Bassvictim, Worldpeace DMT
- I’m on the waitlist for this show and am hoping every second of every day that I get off. Bassvictim’s new album Forever dropped two weeks ago and it’s everything I wanted it to be. Few musicians can pull of a mature indie sleazy, electroclash sound, and Bassvictim continues to prove they are more than capable. I am listening to Mr. President as I write this.
- Sony Hall: Belly
- My guitar teacher shared Star with me in high school rocked my world. Feed the Tree briefly became a personality trait. Belly released an album in 2021, but nothing beats their 90s catalog.
Saturday: 10/25
- Brooklyn Steel: Autrechre, Mark Bloom
- Autechre, the English electronic duo, is often associated with intelligent dance music. Yet, Rob Brown and Sean Booth collectively dismiss the label. Head to Brooklyn Steel and see for yourself if Amber and other Warp classics qualify as IDM.
- Forest Hills: Big Thief, Lomelda
- I’m going to be honest, I don’t love Big Thief. However, public consensus overrides my opinion. The indie folk group released their sixth LP, Double Infinity, in September, their first album without bassist Max Oleartchik. Discussing the album’s creation and band dynamics, drummer James Krivchenia told Pitchfork “We always could have gone down the easier path, but I want the complicated, messy, beautiful, twisted thing.”
- The Broadway: Mopar Stars, Christian Pace, Christopher Emond
- Philadelphia indie rockers Mopar Stars recently shared Only Bar in Town. Cheery and bright, Mopar Stars undoubtedly channels Teenage Fanclub. Joining the bill is NYC’s very own Christian Pace and Christopher Emond.
- Market Hotel: Joyer, High., Whisper Doll, Horse Jumper of Love (solo)
- Joyer’s new album On the Other End of the Line… dropped Friday. The band is part of the Julia’s War Recordings universe and is TAGABOW approved nugaze. Check out my two favorite Joyer songs, Spell and Cure.
- Baby’s All Right: Baby Dance #009
- Line up to be announced. Free late show at Baby’s, doors at 11pm.
Sunday: 10/27
- Rough Trade Below: Machine Girl – DJ Set + Signing
- Loving Wlfgrl was a requisite to be a DJ at my college radio station. Machine Girl’s new album PSYCHOWARRIOR: MG ULTRA X dropped Friday and is “the fucked up, ugly, big sister album to MG Ultra.” Psychowarrior “will make your momma hurl and your do go into heat.” Machine Girl’s words, not mine.
- Barclays Center: Tame Impala, Fcukers
- Tame Impala dropped his new album Deadbeat last week. I don’t love Tame Impala, but I do love Fcukers. Every time I see Fcukers play, I leave the venue drenched in sweat. It’s cathartic.
