Live Show Update 8/11-8/17

Monday August 11th:

Tuesday August 12th:

  • Pete’s Candy Store: Lily Piette
    • Rose Gray will bring the club to Night Club 101. A local of the East London rave scene, Gray’s dance-pop, characterized as “nightlife vignettes” by Paper Magazine, are hedonistic. Head to the show, and get Louder, Please

Wednesday August 13th:

    • Sentimental and sweet, even Kirby’s slowest songs have a soft optimism to them. Listen to her new album Blue Raspberry

Thursday August 14th:

    • She loves boon, and you will too. Boon’s new album DRRTTYY melds brat energy and hyperpop production. It’s digitally indulgent. Bring your best moves to Night Club 101.
  • Berlin: See Plus, Blood Estate, Foreign Love Language
    • See Plus holds a special place in my heart. The New Jersey based band’s latest album Your Portrait is full of poppy, upbeat indie music with a 2000s feel. Before the show, listen to Cats Fighting (In Spanish)

Friday August 15th:

    • idialedyournumber’s song Ghost Hands is an earworm. That’s just the power of DC#AEAD. Stop by Transpecos to get your essential dose of emo, plus a Zachshots set. If you haven’t listened to Zachshots self titled EP yet, stop what you are doing and put on Von Bismark.
    • Friday night at the Stone Circle Theater is all about internet emo, or hyper skramz; whatever you want to name the fusion of emo and electronic music. Come for Thank You Agamemnon and stay for serendipity, they just released their first single Slow Motion.
  • Rodeo: Gunkyard’s 2nd birthday party!
    • Two years of GUNK! Gunkyard, run by Ceci Sturman and Hannah Pruzinsky of Sister, is one of the coolest DIY music zines/substacks out there. It’s where I get most of my show recs. Celebrate their two year birthday at Rodeo!

Saturday August 16th:

  • Public Records: Takuya Nakamura
    • Mixing live jazz and jungle, Nakamura is no stranger to transcending genre. Take Sun, for example.
  • Rockaway Hotel: Cults
    • You and me always forever <3 Cults are playing the Rockaway Hotel! Hear the classics and the band’s newest LP To the Ghosts

Sunday August 17th:

      • Retail Drugs, the project of Jake Laveda, sounds similar to Alex G (Trick to House of Sugar period). Pair an acoustic guitar, high pitched vocals, a tinny keyboard, and there you have it: Alex G circa 2014. Listen to Retail Drug’s song little dog off his new album rECKLless dRIVing and relive high school memories.
  • Union Pool: The Hard Quartet
    • The Hard Quartet is composed of legends: Steven Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, Emmett Kelly, and Jim White. The group clarifies they are not “a project,” they’re a “band.” This “band’s” self-titled album sounds like what you’d expect a group of 90s indie rockers to release. That being said, it’s pretty good.
