Earlier this year Mush hit us with 3D Routine, an incredibly optimistic album super-packed with playfulness and sheer fun. I don’t think I realized this until now, but it was conceptualized around their hope that the buzz around socialist ideals swimming around the ether.
With their latest single “Blunt Instruments,” they announce their second album Lines Redacted, out February 12 of next year. This one’s going to be a lot darker, a lot less foaming at the mouth for drastic reform and more of a subdued feeling of defeat. It goes through the course of a few different narrators and leads up to an inevitable Armageddon. Bleak. But, the music is still definitely explosive. It’s still fun! It’s just got its heels dug into the dirt, it’s fuzzier, it’s a little more filthy.
This first single, “sets the landscape for the record with the protagonist attempting to conduct a surrealist post mortem of an apocalyptic event and re-orientate himself with his new dystopian surroundings. Ultimately, he finds some schadenfreude in the collapse of things.” Well, shit. I will however add that the fuzz and the drive and the guitar lines that feel like the upside-down bit (the best part) of a rollercoaster over and over – make me kind of excited for this theoretical apocalypse.
