I have been hearing good things about Pottery for what feels like a long time, but in actuality has probably just been since last spring when they released their second single “Hank Williams”. With several heavy hitters under their belt, I’ve just learned to trust that what Partisan is putting out is good shit and the boys from Montreal (and the UK) are no exception. No.1, their debut EP with the label, is killer front to back — chock full of dizzying riffs, epic tangents, and the perfect combination of “sick and dirty”. While quite possibly intended as a joke from the project who touts the phrase in the source of all absolute truth and knowledge — their Facebook bio — it’s actually a very accurate description of their sound. Even with the playful twists and turns their songs take with their twangy guitars and hyperspeed runs, the boys can get down and groove as well. I saw the outfit for the first time opening for FONTAINES D.C. at Bowery Ballroom this past week and haven’t been this hype on a support band in a while — it’s exciting to see a band like this with such interesting, unique, genuinely fun music knock it out of the park. You get that they’re great from listening to them at home/work/school/every waking moment, but live and in person it transcends to a whole different level.
Noticing that there was some talent for drawing in the group, I figured it would be fun to forgo the traditional interview format and play an adapted version of Pictionary. Check out their work below and some photos from the evening.
