The video for Atlanta Indie band Twisty Cats’ latest single “Alien” has a very 1980’s Barbarella vibe to it. Which works well because the band’s music has a very 1970-80’s style as well, bringing to mind the likes of David Bowie and The Cure. The disco sound quality of the music would be perfectly at home in Studio 67, as would the glow in the dark face paint and metallic get ups that the band members wear as they explore what is probably a paper mâché cave, hunting down a questionable alien egg.
The video and the accompanying music is great because it is so weird. Seriously, we really need more weird stuff out there these days. Everybody is looking for the next good club song, or radio earworm, but what happened to those semi creepy tunes that were so popular for a while in the 70s? Those DIY looking music videos that were bizarre just for the sake of being bizarre? Those are the ones that really stick in my mind. I’m never going to forget about Queen cross dressing or Trent Reznor spinning around in circles dangling from the ceiling. No shade to dancing pop stars or couples rolling around in bed in wedded bliss, but I will take a slime covered musician any day. Maybe that’s just me.
