The L.A. based Warpaint have released their eponymous second studio album following the successful release of their first full-length album, The Fools. The quartet of Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa have been together for over 10 years, but drummer Mozgawa stated that the girls desired to make an album together “from the ground up,” rather than kicking it with some killer collaborations, as they had done in the past. Their debut EP Exquisite Corpses got a little help from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist John Frusciante while their previous album enjoyed some mixing from disk jockey Andrew Weatherall.
Warpaint is different. The art rock, dream pop sound bleeds between tracks with almost no discrepancy. The first few tracks like “Keep It Healthy” and “Love Is to Die” are a relatively unassuming opening, but “Hi” opens the rest of the album into a slow, dance-y trance. The album is hauntingly beautiful, but serves best as wallpaper music than something to sit and meditate upon. If one is feeling compelled to twirl around in a shawl, conduct a seance or light up an extracurricular activity, then Warpaint is the perfect soundtrack to do so.
