Soundtracked: Music, News, and More Week of March 5

There were way too many releases out this week for me to listen to all of them. Hopefully I did an okay job of picking and choosing the best releases of the week for you. JUST FOR YOU. Feeling special? Good. As always, click on the album cover to listen on Spotify.

Listen:

The Men are back, and I’m very excited with this new Crazy Horse-ish direction they’re taking. I enjoyed the alt-country sounding songs on New Moon more than the punk songs, which is saying a lot. I was curious while listening to the album how the New Moon tracks would hold up against Open Your Heart’s heavier stuff at a live show. My boyfriend saw them at their album release show at the Bowery Ballroom and reported back, “it was weird but cool.” So there ya have it!

Speaking of men, The Replacements––or at least two original members––recorded a covers EP for ailing member Slim Dunlap. It’s already deservedly raised thousands of dollars, and Paul Westerberg sounds exactly the same as he did on Replacements’ albums Let It Be and Tim. Both of which are decades old!

Waxahatchee’s Cerulean Salt is a cool combination of lyrical poetry and catchy harmonies. Listen to “Dixie Cups and Jars” to see what I mean.

Need to get laid? Put on Rhye’s Woman. Let the magic happen. You’re welcome.

Caitlin Rose’s The Stand-In is a pretty great country album. Or is it alt country? Alt-folk-country? Whatever, it rules. Really reminds me of Calexico’s none-jammy stuff. Also, “Pink Champagne” is probably going to become THE wedding song for people who like to get married on farms or something.

Watch:

Beach House released an Eric Wareheim (of Tim & Eric fame)-directed video for “Wishes”. It also stars Ray Wise of Twin Peaks fame. It’s a little weird but not as off the rails as some of their other videos.

Read:

The internet is a really interesting place where a lot of people get to talk about/write about their opinions. Case in point, this Racialicious piece on Macklemore which just left me scratching my head (and I’m not even a fan).

Rookie’s Hero Status on Sade is beautifully written.

I guess this is more of a piece on feminism than music but it does talk about Taylor Swift so I guess that’s kind of music-related?

Random Nostalgia:

Sorry I’m not sorry for getting this stuck in your head.
