In an obvious ode / parody of Beatles mania, Babes in Toyland open their video for their grungy, bottom-heavy single “Sweet ’69” with a gaggle of screaming girls before giving way to a kaleidoscopic collage tour performances, green screen animations, psychedelic parties, and and mock late night television appearances. Their sneering attitude and big, abrasive sound make for an invigorating juxtaposition when coupled with the almost-too-cute fangirl nature of pop music within ’60s culture. One thing’s for sure: these ladies know how to go hard, and in a way that’s still as powerful nearly 20 years later.
