Despite A$AP Rocky telling MTV that he and Rihanna were “just chillin’” in a conspicuously set-like area in Manhattan last month, they were actually making a music video. The result, which came out Wednesday, is at once a torrent of high-fashion name drops, a celebration of street style, and an adorable pairing of two young stars.
There’s a moment in the “Fashion Killa” video in which A$AP stands behind RiRi in a boutique and they smile at their reflections in the mirror over the verse, “Versace: got a lot, but she may never wear it / But she save it so our babies will be flyer than their parents.” This moment is so precious, and the chemistry so palpable, that it’s clear they should probably have those babies as soon as possible (excuse the pun).
The video, directed by Virgil Abloh, opens on a shot of Rihanna’s back in a Supreme tee, which she exchanges for a striking zebra-print Tom Ford gown to go shopping in. At the end of the video, while she and the rapper flirt at a newsstand, she’s dressed down again. The camera lingers on her classic Timberlands, only to cut away to footage of street artist Kidult tagging the Marc Jacobs store in SoHo.
The pink graffiti is a thoughtful endnote to the video, and to the song, which highlights the amalgamated nature of individual style (“different fabrics mixed together”) and the flotsam of culture that contributes to it.
“Fashion Killa” is the fourth single and tenth track of LONG.LIVE.A$AP.
