Watch: EMA “So Blonde”

EMA’s The Future Void is slowly creeping up on its release date. It’s the follow up to her excellent Past Life Martyred Saints, released in 2011. Her new album is her first for Matador, and will be out in early April. You may remember hearing the first song she previewed from the album, “Satellites,” all the way back in December. She’s returned with another preview of the album, in music video form. The new song is titled “So Blonde.”

The first thing you notice listening to “So Blonde” is how completely different it is from “Satellites.” Where “Satellites” was grating and aggressive, “So Blond” is laid back and reminiscent of ’90s grunge and alt rock. It encapsulates a lot of what people think of California culture in music form. The video also emphasizes this point as well. The Vice Cooler directed video (in collaboration with Molly Soda) features many beach adjacent settings and is accented by gifs of people dancing. These pixelated animations only add to it’s ’90s vibe. It fits the tongue in cheek nature of the song very well. Check it out below.

The Future Void is out April 8th on Matador (US) and City Slang (Europe).
