Watch: Evan Patrick “Body”

The hair, the vocal timbre, the slinky R&B stylings. Yes, it’s true — Brooklyn’s Evan Patrick is intentionally riffing on Prince. In this newly released music video for “Body,” however, we get a sense of what Prince’s music might have sounded like in today’s intensely voyeuristic digital age. Apart from all that, the artist currently known as Evan Patrick has a pretty unique and interesting take on our selfie-fueled obsession with our physical shells and what that means for actual intimacy (“how’s your body?” begs the chorus; good fucking question).

Shot in one of Taiwan’s cartoonish love hotels, the video depicts a fly hunney waiting for Evan in a plush suite. Apparently on MDMA, she seduces a wall, applies lipstick, smudges it all over her face, bites her arm, poses on the bed, and touches her legs to make sure they’re still there. Evan does some clumsy pushups, throws a coupon in someone’s face, and finally arrives. Do the bodies live up to the promise of their digital avatars? Perhaps we’ll never know, but that’s an interesting place to leave things. Check it out below.
