For those of you who have always dreamed of crashing a bizarre date between DC punk music legends, you’re in luck. Mary Timony, best known from her time with Helium and Wild Flag, finally gives you your chance in the latest video from her new band Ex Hex, which shares its name with her third solo album. The video for “Hot and Cold” features Timony on a date with an uptight and utterly boring incarnation of Ian Svenonious, another DC punk icon given his history fronting the ’90s bands Nation of Ulysses and The Make-Up.

While her Ex Hex bandmates crash the party and the date devolves into a food fight, Mary Timony remains as cool as ever, joining in on the fun and reminding us with her clear, unpretentious vocals and sharp guitar playing exactly how she attained indie cult idol status. Although 2013 marked the end (at least for now) of a highly praised three-year run for Wild Flag, the supergroup she formed with Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, and Janet Weiss, it’s clear that Timony has found a new project worthy of her efforts. Ex Hex recently played the SXSW Festival and has set a series of tour dates through April. As a final incentive to watch the video, it features bassist Betsy Wright dousing a plate of ham with Hidden Valley ranch dressing and Laura Harris playing the drums with sticks of celery. Hard to beat. Watch below.

The “Hot and Cold” 7″ is available now on Merge Records, with Ex Hex’s debut album expected later this year.
