Hinds truly can do no wrong. Following up the daydream of “Riding Solo”, the group is back with “Good Bad Times” — a surprisingly meaningful sentiment that avoids getting bogged down by the playful kitsch that’s been added to the video. Just as “Riding Solo” was both a lament and a celebration of the life that these girls must live as young people and as artists, “Good Bad Times” touches on both sides of a different coin. It’s about the disconnect in relationships — how one person sees things one way, and the other sees the complete opposite. How things can appear good, when in fact that’s not the reality for everyone involved.
Hinds don’t need the video the lay on the emotion behind this any thicker, and instead dress up as eighties inspired superheroes to fight the traumas of the everyday. That in itself illustrates the group’s magic. While they’ve made a more concentrated turn away from garage rock towards pop, they’re never trying too hard. They maintain that effortless quality and fun to everything they do, while still having meaningful songwriting that connects with listeners beyond the surface-level catchy melodies.
The group also announced today that their third record, The Prettiest Curse, will be released April 3rd, so it’s safe to say we’ll have much more great music coming our way the next few months.
