Experimental, multi-talented artist Nick Koenig (AKA Hot Sugar) has just released a trippy video for “Your Nails Look Pretty,” a song from his second LP Seductive Nightmares 2. The video — “based on a true story” — offers a glimpse into the life of a man, played by Koenig, and his two small children, who parade around in black executioners’ masks. Some of the imagery is mysterious and subtle, like marbles with spiders inside, while others are much obvious in their psychedelic connotations: see the man’s address of “420.” Regardless, my advice would be to let the dreaminess of it all wash over you and don’t think too hard.
Visuals aside, this track is a stumbly, electronic lullaby, with tinkling synth and restless percussion. It hypnotizes as much as it confounds, keeping the listener ever on her toes. You could call it electronica, though that seems a little reductive; I know Koenig likes to call it “Associative Music.” Regardless, this fresh little gem is a must.
