There is such a unique specificity in each case of lovesickness. Madeline The Person illustrates this beautifully in her latest single, “August”. Drawing on the centering moment of realizing her life had reached the pinnacle of its messiness, she retells her longing for a love stuck on the other side of the country. The inner conflict of not wanting to share her true feelings for fear that she would annoy or bore her faraway partner, while losing her mind dealing with them on her own is shared with honesty and simplicity.
The video shows Madeline and Melchor occupying the same space at different times — almost as if they’re occupying different timelines preventing them from being together. Going through the motions of their every day routines (some elements more reminiscent of a depressive episode than others) there’s an overwhelming sense of loneliness in their solitude despite the world they’re occupying being as brightly colored as Madeline’s hair.
There is nothing quite like the experience of feeling everything all at once and Madeline The Person and Adam Melchor have found a way to harness that energy and put it to song so the listener can live through it as well.
