Check out an excerpt and some outtakes from our upcoming zine feature on Mattiel
It was a hot Friday afternoon when Mattiel, who was in the midst of her US tour, came over to my apartment just a couple of hours before she was set to play NYC venue, Berlin. We had just finished an amazing photo session in which we stumbled into a Dominican beauty salon filled with purple walls, green plants, and elder women conversing. 24 hours later, something unfortunate happened with the film rolls we shot that day, meaning we had to reshoot before she left New York. The next day we found ourselves in Chinatown.
I grew up about an hour south of Atlanta. I’m an only child and I grew up out in the sticks, so I spent a lot of time alone compared to my schoolmates who lived in neighborhoods. So I think my sense of identity developed quickly… getting to know myself very well at a young age. My community in Atlanta is quite small – they are mostly art students / professors & generally creative people. It’s good to keep that circle around me – they challenge me to be a better artist.
This next album is entitled Satis Factory, so to visually represent that idea, we shot Keep the Change in a cement manufacturing complex outside of Atlanta (which was actually a lot more dangerous than I was initially anticipating. Lots of pitfalls and scary heights, so it felt like I was flying through a sci fi video game).
